Vole Extermination in Minnesota

Voles in Minnesota

There are a variety of types of voles, but the most common in Minnesota is the meadow vole, which is also sometimes called “field mice.” Voles are similar-looking to mice but without the ears and long tail. Voles are attracted to areas with a lot of trees and plant coverage for protection and food. This makes property damage from voles a vulnerability in Minnesota. Consider hiring a professional pest control or outdoor solutions company to exterminate your vole problem.

Understanding Vole Damage in Minnesota

Voles are a persistent problem for Minnesota homeowners — especially through the winter months. When snow covers your yard, voles create hidden runways and tunnels just beneath the surface, feeding on grass roots and damaging the base of trees and shrubs. As the snow melts, those trails become visible, leaving behind dead patches, chewed bark, and bare spots that make your lawn look uneven and unhealthy.

Because voles remain active year-round, they can quickly multiply and spread damage across your property if left unchecked. A professional Vole Exterminator from Warner’s Outdoor Solutions can help identify the early signs of infestation and prevent costly lawn and landscape repairs.

How to Identify Vole Damage

Vole activity can be easy to miss until the damage is already done. Here’s what to look for:

  • Narrow, well-defined surface runways running across your grass
  • Small burrow holes leading underground near garden beds, trees, or sheds
  • Chewed bark or gnaw marks at the base of young trees or shrubs
  • Dead or patchy areas in your lawn when the snow melts in spring

If you see these telltale runways after winter, it’s a strong sign you’re dealing with voles. The sooner you act, the easier it is to stop them from spreading and protect your yard’s appearance.

When Is The Best Time For Vole Pest Control in Minnesota?

You’ll want to perform your vole removal service when the cold weather starts to appear around early fall. The cold forces them to find coverage for the winter, so they dig down to the roots of the grass. Voles cause damage that requires reseeding or sodding to repair the lawn in the spring. This weather also causes voles to start to look for other sources of food, such as small trees and plants.

Why Are They in My Yard?

Voles are also known as “meadow mice”; they are attracted to any place that has grass, because this is a source of not only food but also a shelter for their nests. Visit our vole control lawn care page to learn more about their damage to the landscape and vole control solutions from Warner’s.

Are Voles a Danger to My Family?

While voles are not aggressive and rarely come into contact with humans, the damage they cause can indirectly create safety concerns. These small rodents can weaken the root systems of trees and shrubs by gnawing on bark and tunneling underground, making them unstable over time. Long-term tree damage from voles may cause trees to fall during storms or high winds, posing a risk to people, pets, and nearby structures.

This application is safe for your yard, family, and pets when applied by our licensed technicians. It targets the key areas where voles are most likely to tunnel, ensuring long-term protection throughout the season.
  • 2. Baiting and Removal: For active infestations, we pair our application with a targeted baiting program that eliminates voles already present in your yard. Our technicians strategically place bait stations in vole runways and burrow openings, ensuring effective removal without disrupting your lawn.

Depending on the level of infestation, Warner’s may also recommend ongoing monitoring or follow-up visits to ensure that vole populations remain under control. By combining prevention and extermination methods, our approach delivers both immediate results and lasting protection for your property.

How To Identify Mice

Adult mice range from 3 to 5 inches long with the tail length being as long as the body. On average, a mouse weighs 1/2 of an ounce. House mice are brown or gray-black, with a light-colored underbelly. They have a pointed nose with large ears. The clearest indicator of mouse infestation is droppings; these are 1/8 – 1/4 of an inch and rod-shaped. Another sign is gnawing; with their strong buck teeth they are able to chew through almost anything.

Why are they in my home?

  • Mice do not hibernate; when temperatures drop they seek a warm place to live
  • Unfortunately, they are able to fit into spaces as small as 1/4 of an inch
  • With their heightened senses, they can be attracted to the smell of food in your home
  • With their excellent mobility, mice can climb up vertical surfaces and jump up almost 13 inches

Are Mice a danger to my family?

  • Mice can spread diseases such as salmonellosis and dysentery by contaminating your food and utensils with their urination and droppings
  • Mice produce about 50 droppings throughout the day
  • A mouse has no control over its bladder; that means it will urinate anywhere, anytime – like in your cupboards, utensil drawers, the pantry, and so on
  • As mentioned above, mice will chew on almost anything. They have been known to damage electrical wires, and cause structural damage to homes

How can Warner’s help me?

Luckily, there are many effective methods to eliminate mice from your home.

  • To prevent mice from entering your home, we will eliminate all openings by using caulk. This smooth patching material will prevent mice from pulling and chewing through it
  • Another technique we will use is bait selection. This includes meal form pellets that the mice will feed on
  • If mice reside inside your home, we will use bait stations in problem areas to get the population under control
